SAM CHAMBERS

Since I started messing around with photoshop in year 10 I knew I wanted to do something with it, it wasn't until college that I decided I wanted it to be Graphic Design. 5 years of education experience in Graphic Design, 2 years in college and 3 years at Portsmouth university. During this time I have worked with professional clients, multiple long personal led and group projects, it was here that I discovered I really enjoyed working with type and the minutiae that comes with that, understanding how people read text blocks and making publications and type look good on screen and paper.

New Towns

I have always been interested in Brutalist buildings in the UK, especially seeing them in London everytime I went there to visit as a kid, so when I had the chance to explore Brutalism further I jumped on it. The project began with a focus on the Brutalist building movement in the UK, I began exploring this world discovering both the successes and failures of Brutalism. This evolved into the New Towns movement that began in England just after the second world war. It was really interesting for me to look into these cities and understand how they were built and designed. The aim of my project was to create a book that would be used by designers as a way to understand the designers and designs of the past from their failures to their successes. I decided to do this with both the Brutalist and New Cities movements in the UK, looking at their designers to create an understanding of how these were built and designed. I think creating this understanding would be useful for new designers as they can use this information to become better designers.
