Hi there, I’m Catarina, a Multidisciplinary Designer with a passion for making things that have an impact. I’m an easy-going but organised person, living for work that finds equilibrium between fun and discipline.
I’ve grown accustomed to strict (but thrilling) deadlines, and I can continuously deliver because of a professional and calm approach under pressure. There's a lot more I could develop on, but why not do that over a nice cup of tea, even if a virtual one? The Book of Barcodes
The ISTD 2021 brief “Putting Things in Order” mainly focused on classification and sorting systems, asking for a fresh interpretation of lesser-known ways in which people categorise things.
After extensive research on how and why humans sort out things, the topic was narrowed down to barcodes and how they inherently help us categorise information. This is an intriguing subject, as barcodes are often overlooked by all of us. My response took the form of a book communicating the fascinating past, present and future of barcodes. The goal with this is to create awareness towards these machine-readable labels and share their ever growing importance in our 21st century society.
While we recognise some of the areas in which this technology operates, their use has been extended to more industries than we can imagine. Additionally, we don’t really understand how their mechanics work, we just expect them to. All these factors contributed to the production of the publication, aiming to enlighten the reader on the topic and take them on an interactive journey.
This project received a Membership to the International Society of Typographic Designers due to its effective visual communication and interesting approach. While working on this brief was challenging due to the complexity of the topic, this project has been highly rewarding and allowed me to understand the true dimension and importance of seemingly the smaller categorising systems.
